Lesson 9 PPL

02 Sep 2004

A Bit of a change, only 2 days since the last lesson instead of 6weeks! There were loads of planes up and around today because it was navy day, with displays going on in Plymouth Sound, and it was also quite busy for for the two airlines serving Plymouth at the time (Air SouthWest and Air Wales) on Thursdays.

My instructor only gave me what to say to the tower at the start of this lesson, as it was the first time departing directly into the circuit. I had to takeoff and fly one circuit and then do a touch and go by myself, talking to the tower with no guidance, while my instructor noted down all of the things I needed to do better!

I taxied out to the intersection of the two runways, and lined up on runway 13, took off, turned onto crosswind, then downwind, forgot the pre-landing checks, turned base, final, and then landed quite well, before immediately applying power and lifting off again. Once we were at a safe altitude, my instructor mentioned the things i’d missed, and we carried on doing more of the same.

I went around and did another 5 circuits, one without flaps (which was the best landing I have ever done!) and one glide approach (where the engine is at idle power, simulating a failure).

When we were back in the flying school my instructor said that if I was old enough and I had had my medical, this is the point where my next flight would be solo!
